CDMX

Ciudad de México

Mexico’s capital was founded by Amerindians (Native Americans) just like Quito. It is the oldest capital city in the Americas .

The city was built on an island of Lake Texoco by the Aztecs and became the capital of their empire. Its name was Tenochtitlán, but it was almost completely destroyed and rebuilt after the Spanish conquest and became the capital of New Spain.

The fact that the city was built on a lake maybe the reason why we see so many old buildings, mainly churches, sinking

Church of San Francisco
                                  Church of Guadalupe

The name Tenochtitlán means rock with abundance of Indian fig / cactus pear.

(Tetl-stone; Nochtli- Indian fig / cactus pear; Tlan- abundance)

In1585 it was officially known as Ciudad de México (Mexico City).

It is the 10th largest city in the world in terms of population and the 3rd in the American continent after New York and São Paulo.

Our guide told us that after London it is the second city with more museums. In fact it has so much to see...
