The English Showcase

Part of learning a language is also understanding the culture and the history of the people who communicate in that idiom. So through the showcase, we have the opportunity of viewing a little window, from which we can peak into what it means to be English, American, Australian, South African, Jamaican…
Every month, the showcase presents themes and events related to anglo-american culture, which then are all discussed in class.
In September, there was the summer news. So, events related to the H1N1 flu, the 40th anniversary of the Moon Landing and the deaths of Senator Kennedy and the singer Michael Jackson were presented. Also, the passage of the aircraft carrier Eisenhower through Lisbon and Usain Bolt’s amazing lightning bolt world records were shown in our little window to the world!
Obviously, besides the major current events, there is also the English Past, which molds current anglo-american culture. There was a chronological poster with all the kings and queens of England, along with a brief presentation of their amazing castles!
In October, “as time goes by…” deserved its own special tribute in our little window. Casablanca, the amazing love-war-time story was shown to 9th grade students. So, the showcase allowed us to get a little glimpse of the movie and the time which it portrays: World War II.  It is worth remembering that we are celebrating the 70th anniversary of the beginning of the Second World War.
